EU Moves Toward Sanctions Against Ben-Gvir Over Flotilla Abuse

(MENAFN) The European Union has launched preliminary work on potential sanctions against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over his conduct toward humanitarian activists intercepted while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza by sea, according to a report published Friday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported that EU officials briefed member states' ambassadors on Wednesday that diplomats had begun exploring possible measures against Ben-Gvir, even as divisions persist among the bloc's 27 member nations. Discussions remain at an early stage and are being conducted behind closed doors, the report said. A spokesperson for the European Commission did not immediately respond to Bloomberg's request for comment.

The move follows Israel's mid-May attack on the Gaza-bound Global Sumud humanitarian flotilla in international waters, which was captured in live broadcasts showing Israeli naval forces intercepting the vessels.

The sharpest international backlash was triggered by a video later released by Israeli authorities depicting Ben-Gvir moving among detained activists who were kneeling in tightly packed formations while zip-tied. The footage showed the minister waving an Israeli flag and taunting those in detention — images that drew swift and widespread global condemnation.

All activists were subsequently released following mounting international pressure.

Should the EU proceed, the measures would mark a significant escalation in European scrutiny of individual Israeli officials amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
